Moves We Teach in Our Street Dance Classes
B-boying or Break dancing: Breaking or B-boying is a part of the main dances of hip hop along with popping and locking. Break dance includes four basic steps, toprock, which is done standing up with lot of footwork, downrock which also involves footwork but with your body supported with your hands on the floor, freezes, which are stylish poses done with your weight on your hands and power moves which include challenging acrobatic tricks like the flare (where the dancer rests his body on his hands and brings his legs around for a 360 degree turn), windmill (where the dancer turns on the floor with his legs up in the air in a v-shape and with the help of his shoulders, back or hands) or the headspin.
Locking: It is a dance style that involves a series of quick moves followed by sudden pause. It is different from popping in the respect that in locking, the pose is held for a longer period of time. It is quite comical and is often addressed to the audience.
Popping: It is another of the funk dance styles that evolved in California in the 1970s. It involves quick stiffening and then relaxing of muscles in a series to make an illusion of flow or movement. It was created by the popping group known as the Electric Boogaloos. It includes a number of popular dance styles including robotting, miming, crazy legs and slides (like the moonwalk).
House Dance: House dance is so called because it was developed "in-house" in popular nightclubs in the early eighties. It incorporates a number of styles including African, Jazz, Latin and even tap dance.
Electro Dance: Also called tecktonik, is a style of street dancing that originated in France, primarily from a club called Metropolis in the early 2000s. It uses a blend of all the above styles along with disco dance styles.
