Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world and one of the most ethnically diverse. Its culture is a dynamic mix of influences from indigenous Amerindian, European, African, and the United States.
Brazilian music can be traced back over 400 years to when Brazil was under Portuguese rule. During their coronation ceremonies and celebrations for their Kings & Queens their parade became known as the “Maracatu.”. The Maracatu emerged as the musical collective and dance for street celebrations The festivals evolved to include dancers and a “bateria” (percussion freestyle).Fast forward 400 years and now Brazil is famous for the carnival festivals where thousands parade the streets of the Rio de Janeiro dancing & playing drums to samba rhythms. This legacy continues today as Brazilian music is often performed in the tradition of the Maracatu (comprised of instruments such as Ago-go bells, repinique, and surdo drums), extending far beyond the borders of Brazil

What Happens in a Samba Music Workshop?
Samba drumming is one of the most popular forms of music in Brazil. It is widely viewed as Brazil’s national musical style.
In these workshops children practice and perform different Samba rhythms, first using their voices and then on the different Samba drums. Then the whole piece is put together to create a carnival atmosphere.
Participants learn to play authentic Brazilian rhythms and instruments with correct technique in the dynamic Carnival style.
We can customise the workshop for any level to suit the age and experience of the group. Participants work with the whole range of Samba instruments, including surdo, repinique, timba, tambourine and all kinds of percussion, and will learn to master the characteristic rhythmic grooves of Samba.
Participants learn to play authentic Brazilian rhythms and instruments with correct technique in the dynamic Carnival style. Phonics and word-rhymes aid musical memory so multi-section pieces can be learned and performed easily, working at a level to suit the age and experience of the group. participants work with the whole range of Samba instruments, including surdo, repinique, timba, tambourine and all kinds of percussion, and will learn to master the characteristic rhythmic syncopations and grooves of Samba.
Sessions may run from 30mins to 1 hour, depending on the age group, and fit with the schools timetable where possible. The time may be used in many ways; often schools want every class to have at least one contact so everyone has an opportunity to share the excitement. We also encourage a performance towards the end of a project.
