Participants will learn these and other fascinating facts about Chinese culture and history as they explore this fully interactive introduction to the country. By the end of the session, they will understand how traditional dances were linked with both religion and the everyday experiences and events of the time.

Chinese Ribbon Dance Workshop
One of the most beautiful dance spectacles on this planet, the dream-like Chinese Ribbon Dance is a sumptuous display of exotic texture, delightful colour and graceful movement. Often accompanied by haunting Chinese melodies, this workshop will leave a lasting impression on all who take part. Using hand-held ribbons, participants will learn how the tempo of the music relates to the different ribbon movements: from large, circular sweeps to short, sharp flicks. An excellent introduction to the theatrical element of Chinese dance, this fun, authentic and fully interactive workshop will culminate in the chance to take part in a live performance.

Chinese Fan Dance
There are few dances more beautiful and spectacular than the Chinese Fan Dance. The sight of numerous delicately fluttering fans suddenly bursting into life, as dancers glide and whirl across the stage is nothing short of stunning. The vibrant feather or silk fans can work together to form wheels, waves, trains and many other impressive structures. During our fun and interactive workshops, participants will enjoy learning the smooth, flowing movements and practising the delicate body poses that make up this graceful dance. At the same time, they will gain an understanding of one of the ways in which the Chinese culture expresses joy and grace through art.

Chinese Lion Dance
Children and adults alike are certain to be impressed by the spectacular and dramatic lion dance. Two costumed performers wheel and bound around the stage, crouching low to the floor before suddenly rearing high above the audience in a display of power and might. The outrageous costumes, with their exaggerated features and bright colouration are always a hit, while the sound of gongs and drums increase the sense of drama. The head of the dragon portrays the animal’s emotions while the tail end contributes co-ordination and acrobatic stunts. Participants will learn about the fascinating history of this unique art form and will have the chance to dance with the lion – if they dare!
Chinese Handkerchief Dance
Teamwork, manual dexterity, intricate choreography and extravagant gestures and poses all come together in the lively Chinese handkerchief dance. The ornate and colourful handkerchiefs are a delight to hold and can be waved, fluttered, spun and even thrown to create different effects. Originating in North East China, but now performed throughout the country, the handkerchief dance is a popular Chinese folk custom.
