Are you excited and ready for the Olympic Games? Well we are! It’s time you get excited too!

Here at Trap Media we want to give you ideas and opportunities to help you make the most of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Using the power of the Olympic values our aim is to help inspire young people to take part in school sport and PE to work towards leading healthy lifestyles, with the Olympic Torch just being lit now is the time to light your students creativity and passion for the Olympics!

We wanted to give you some tips and ideas to help prepare your children for the Olympics with some basic activities you can use adapt and develop. We offer a range of workshops that can be directly used towards raising the awareness of the Olympics.

Activities to Introduce the Olympics:

Olympic Event

Why not give children the opportunity to design, run and take part in their own Olympic event. This could either take place in one day or over a number of PE lessons or lunch times.

Devise teams to give children the opportunity to take part in several events against others of their own age and ability. Throughout the competition they can also score points for their design skills, creativity, organisational skills and their ability to officiate and lead.

Why not book an enterprising workshop geared towards the Olympics, some sports coaching workshops that have mini Olympic events for your students to take part in?

Opening Ceremony

Symbolism has always been a major part of the Olympic Games, with high-profile opening and closing ceremonies providing a combination of messages from the host nation and Olympic ideology.

The Olympic flame symbolises the endeavour for perfection, the struggle for victory, peace and friendship.

What message should be given out in the opening speech of the school Olympics and who should make it?

Who should be chosen to light the school’s very own Olympic flame?

How would competitors initially enter the arena?

Give your children the opportunity to devise and discuss their own choices for the opening ceremony, why not design their own Olympic touch too?

With so many nationalities involved in the Olympics multicultural workshops offer a great introduction to other cultures. Try African Drumming, Chinese Ribbon Dance or Samba Dance all great ways to devise an opening ceremony for your students to partake in.

Olympic Logo Design

Host a mini-Olympic logo design competition; it is a prime example of how sport can act as a vehicle to develop cross-curricular learning – the focus in this instance being design and technology.

As a massive sporting, social and cultural festival, the Games always leaves a strong legacy for its host city. Similarly, a study of the Olympics can have a lasting impact on school life, as through in school experiences children’s interest in sport may be heightened or even initiated. With so many cultures and nations taking place most subjects can gear lessons towards the Olympics not just PE.

The perfect addition to celebrating the Olympics are our visual arts workshops, try a mask making workshop, photography workshop or perhaps sculpture and design your own Olympic based projects we can meet your requirements and outcomes.

What is Black History Month?

Black History Month (BHM) in the UK is a four-week period of celebrations which has been running for over twenty years. Black History Month, which takes place during October, is an event to be celebrated and welcomed by wider society, as it is a time when people of all nationalities recognise the contributions that black culture has made to Britain and to the wider world. They are a great way to celebrate and learn more about Black History, so please read on to discover which workshop or workshops would suit your needs!

African Drumming Workshops – The Most Popular Choice!

Celebrating Black History by exploring different percussion instruments is both uplifting and fun! Participants will look at both the origins of the instruments and how they are used. The workshops provide pupils with the opportunity to create their own piece of music, either using African drums or a variety of percussion instruments. Learn West African drumming rhythms and percussion music from Senegal, Gambia, Ghana, Ivory Coast. During this African drumming workshop participants will collaborate with master drummers to learn the art of drumming leading to an uplifting and collaborative performance.

Using traditional drums from West Africa other percussion instruments, our highly skilled and experienced facilitators lead vibrant drumming sessions that open up amazing opportunities for individuals and groups from all backgrounds.

African drumming has a great cultural heritage, making it ideal for celebrating Black History Month and it is an incredibly popular workshop. Africa has a rich variety of instruments and many call it the “drum continent”.

In this African Drumming workshop, a drum circle will be created and a master drummer will teach participants how to play the Djembe drum. Participants will also learn the significance and uses of drumming in African culture, where they are always an accompaniment for any manner of ceremony, such as births, deaths marriages etc.

West African Drumming workshops music accompanies important life events, like marriage, childbirth, working and hunting. It has a very close relationship both with dance and with the tones and rhythmic patterns of the local language. The music is built from varied timbres playing interlocking rhythmic parts to form a polyrhythmic whole, often led by a master drummer using call and response patterns.

Sessions may run from 30mins to 1 hour, depending on the age group, and fit with the school timetable where possible. The time may be used in many ways; often schools want every class to have at least one contact so everyone has an opportunity to share the excitement. We also encourage a African Drumming performance towards the end of a project.

We will provide everyone with a Djembe drum and take the participants through a body rhythm workshop, leading in to a traditional composition involving multiple parts. Everyone will be able to play an instrument. The end result is a powerful sound and highly stimulating experience.

Black History Month goes beyond history, making children aware about black history and celebrating is something that our workshops offer.

Our list of Black History Month Workshops includes the very popular Traditional African Drumming Workshop and African Dance Workshops plus many more (keep reading to find out).

Our series’ of Black History Month workshops are dedicated to providing a range of educational workshops which serve to highlight the African culture, black history and engage and educate.

Source - BBC News education correspondent, Sean Coughlan

Parents in the UK feel powerless as consumer pressures have effects on their children.

The study by Unicef, comparing families in the UK, Sweden and Spain, found UK parents buying high status brands to “protect” their children from being bullying.

In the UK families felt under much greater pressure and where worried about a shortage of time with their children and feeling unable to resist the “materialism” of modern childhood.

Overwhelming fears about not having the right brand of trainers or electronic gadgets for children means that parents in the UK, mostly those on low incomes, felt they had to buy these goods, even if it meant getting into debt.

A 14-year-old from the UK told researchers: “No matter how much money they have, people still manage to put up a front of like they have money… You could live in a dustbin, and as long as you have an iPod, a Blackberry, then you’re accepted.”

This value attached to such possessions was a particular feature of family life in the UK, said report author Agnes Nairn.

“Fears about ‘brand bullying’ are much stronger in the UK. Parents seemed to feel much more helpless,” said Dr Nairn.

“There was an incredibly strong feeling that children have to have these things to fit in – otherwise they’ll be the only ones in their class not to have them.”

The Unicef report describes parents as feeling “compelled” to buy – even though they knew much of this spending was “pointless”.

“Toys, broken presents and unused electronics in the home were witness to this drive to acquire new possessions,” say the researchers.

It is clear that in order to be “accepted” within schools having the latest phone, gadget, trainers or brands does have an impact. Not fitting in can cause bullying problems within schools and does have a larger effect on family’s who try to buy things to help prevent their children from being bullied.

In order to combat these issues children need to recognise that they do not have to have an iphone to make real friends and to be accepted.

Educating children and making them aware of the problems they face regarding all issues surrounding bullying is something that Trap Media takes very seriously. There can be so many problems that lead to bullying, not fitting in either socially or regarding possessions is a key problem that needs to be addressed.

During Our Anti Bullying Workshops we aim to tackle numerous subjects regarding bullying. If there is a specific issue for example text bullying or brand bulling that your school is facing then we can gear or workshops around you and your chosen subjects and targets.

We find interaction through role play and drama makes children respond and learn at a much more efficient rate. Not only this but it enables children and teens to openly discuss and run through scenarios they may face day to day.

Brand Bullying is fairly new term but it has been around for a while, wanting possessions that others have and being made to conform has been an issue for years. Often bullying is focused around fitting in and not having the latest brands is something that bullies can use against victims.

Our Bullying Workshops are aimed at helping children and teens understand in more detail about bullying and how to deal with it. Our Anti Bullying Workshops are a great soundboard for students to discuss real problems or potential issues that worry them.

We also offer workshops for adults to help guide them in the correct direction regarding bullying, aimed at teachers and parents it is important to know how to deal with both victims and bullies.

Our Anti Bullying Workshops are designed to be customised according to the needs of your organisation and are a natural compliment to your anti-bullying policy.

Schools are being urged to introduce new and interesting female-friendly fitness activities an classes dancing and other alternative fitness program that lean towards female interests.

Recent research suggests that girls are doing less physical activities in schools than boys and this gap is increasing over time.

A study for the Women’s Sports and Fitness Foundation indicates more than half of girls are put off by PE classes.

The WSFF wants schools to make PE lessons more appealing towards girls.

The research was conducted by Loughborough University; it found huge differences between the attitudes of girls and boys towards doing PE.

Those differences were bigger in older school children.

Falling Exercise Levels In Children

Eight-year-olds did similar levels of activity: about 60% of those questioned, both girls and boys, said they did regular exercise – at least an hour, five days a week.

But among 14-year-old girls, that figure had halved – only 31% said they exercised regularly, compared with 50% of 14-year-old boys.

The research found most girls wanted to do more physical activity, but many were put off by PE classes.

Some said they did not like exercising in front of boys, and they were not confident about their sporting skills.

Source – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health

Alternative PE Workshops For Schools

This recent information indicates that females in schools are not fully catered for, or that something is missing that could result in a healthier happy lifestyle for students. We can also see that not only females but males and students in general need to be fully satisfied and have as many options as possible regarding fitness.

The Solution – Sports & Fitness Workshops

Children and teenagers access to cigarettes is most often through peer groups at school, suggests research drawing on the habits of over 9,000 young smokers today.

The study from the Institute of Education, University of London, says efforts to stop smoking should tackle such “social sources” of cigarettes to help prevent the problem

Researchers are saying that this would reduce the amount of visibility of smoking in children and teenagers lives. This would in turn help to battle smoking in schools and within the youth of today.

The study from the institute’s Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre looks at how to interrupt the process by which youngsters take up smoking.

Using Drugs & Alcohol Awareness Workshops

Smoking is not the only issue amongst the youth of today in the UK there are huge drug and alcohol issues, smoking is a small part of the growing puzzle. This method of trying to reduce the amount of exposure children and teenagers get towards cigarettes is also being used towards alcohol and other stronger drugs.

More can be done to help prevent children and teens from using drugs, we need to tackle the problems head on and from all angels in order to make a dent.

Utilising Trap Media’s Drugs & Alcohol Awareness Workshops your organisation can have a bespoke workshop, this helps make children aware of the issues that drugs and alcohol bring, and provides them with a comfortable sound board to discuss current problems and issues they may be facing day to day.

During a anti smoking workshop participants will be shown some of the effects that smoking can have.

International studies of millions of people by government, industry, universities,
and private research institutions have determined that smoking can cause:

1. Stained teeth, fingers, and hair
2. Increased frequency of colds, particularly chest colds and bronchitis
3. Asthma
4. Neuralgia
5. Gastrointestinal difficulties, constipation, diarrhea, and colitis
6. Headaches
7. Nausea
8. Convulsions
9. Leukoflakia (smoker’s patch)
10. Insomnia
11. Heart murmur
12. Buerger’s disease (inflammation of blood vessel linings)
13. Shortness of breath
14. Arthritis
15. Smoker’s hack
16. Nervousness
17. Wrinkles and premature aging
18. Tension
19. Gastric, duodenal, and peptic ulcers
20. Lung cancer
21. Cancer of the lip, tongue, pharynx, larynx, and bladder
22.Emphysema
23.High blood pressure
24. Heart disease
25. Artherosclerosis & arteriosclerosis (thickening and loss of elasticity of the blood vessels with lessened blood flow)
26. Inflammation of the sinus passages
27. Tobacco angina (nicotine angina pectoris)
28. Pneumonia
29. Influenza
30. Pulmonary tuberculosis
31. Tobacco amblyopia
32. impared hearing
33. Decreased sexual activity
34. Mental depression

Blood flow to the extremities is decreased (cold hands and feet). One puff lowers the temperature in the fingertips 1ºF to 3ºF in 3 minutes.

Nicotine affects the nerve-muscle junctions, causing tremors and shaking. Nicotine causes narrowing and constriction of the arteries, adding to the heart’s load. Nicotine, through its ability to stimulate, causes excitement and anxiety. But the effect wears off, often a period of depression follows, whereupon another cigarette is taken. Nicotine, an insecticide, makes the blood more viscous and decreases the available oxygen. It also adversely affects the breathing, sweating, intestinal, and heart actions of our autonomic nervous system, probably due to hindering the blood flow to the nerve centres in the brain.

This is just touching on some on the physical and mental effects smoking can have our workshops are run by one of our experienced trainers who are enhanced CRB checked. The workshops are designed to be interactive using discussions and theatre to interact with participants.

During our anti drug and alcohol workshops we aim to identify and correct myths and ignorance, and to ensure that participants are aware of up-to-date information on the consequences of using banned substances and tobacco, and of the misuse of alcohol, solvents.

Together we explore how best to tackle pressures, and equally importantly, how to support peers and friends in making and keeping to the right life-affecting decisions.

All our workshops, we tailor content and emphasis to each school’s policy and needs. Overall review and revision of our workshops is a continuing process.

Whether it is a football team, a team of volunteers or team members within a company, it is important to understand how corporate team building can add to your organisation! In the case of companies, team building is a crucial aspect which helps determine how profitable the company will become. Long term commitments to making a team more successful will greatly benefit the company in many ways, from day to day operation, functions, services and problem solving.

Organisations who take the time to invest in their employees typically benefit from employees who remain committed and who persevere through the hard times a company may go through. Team building can be viewed as costly to some companies, not only in money but in time taken to achieve the required results.

Effective corporate team building will provide the business whether large or small, with an opportunity to build upon a solid foundation. Corporate Team building will also lead to having employees who are excited about training, learning, and growing within the company. Any time an employee feels appreciated and feels rewarded for their work and efforts in their company, the employee is more likely to work to his or her fullest potential.

Long-term employees are one of the best aspects of a company. Having long-term employees mean that the company will have a smaller percentage of a turnover rate in employees. Having a smaller turnover rate will result in the business spending less money on training new people due to former employees leaving. The greater level of standards and the effective operation will help the company to enjoy higher prosperity and a more solid future.

Here at Trap Media we offer interactive team building drumming events to help unite your company boost your employee motivation and reduce stress levels. Trap Media’s corporate drumming events are suitable for conferences, promotional events, stress management, ice-breaker, events closers or just corporate entertainment!

Whether you’re looking to increase productivity, reduce stress, stimulate some team-building, or just improve morale, offering your employees or colleagues a little creative outlet is just what you need! When it comes to team building and ice breakers, there is one method that has blown all others out of the water in recent years.

Rather than sharing information about your life or thinking of ways to solve problems in groups at your next corporate event, you can join the thousands of people who have taken part in the journey of team building in the form of corporate drumming.

Not only are Corporate Drumming Workshops & Events proven to relieve stress and improve mental and physical well-being, they also encourage and celebrate teamwork and community in the workplace.

Many big companies have begun using corporate drumming events as a way of team building or ice breakers. We have worked with HSBC, Birdseye, Kimberley Clarke and Tam Air to name but a few, in venues such as Lords Cricket Ground and the Common Wealth Club.

Corporate Drumming Workshop @ Birds Eye by Trap Media

There are many benefits to corporate drumming, and plenty of businesses throughout the country have been greatly rewarded by their experiences with corporate drumming workshops.

Large companies can have a tendency to let their staff members get lost in the sea of people, becoming in some people’s eyes purely a number as opposed to an individual. With hundreds or thousands of employees, it is easy for employees to feel neglected or unmotivated.

Corporate team building events often fall short, but team building drumming has the ability to motivate, and inspire long after the event has ended. The beat of the drum is much more powerful than the barriers of spoken word, and it allows active participants to work together, creating a strong sense of purpose, unity, and determination.

The results of a Corporate Drumming Event are always positive, and the return on your company’s investment is always positive and lasts a long time after the event.

One of the beauties of Trap Media’s corporate drumming workshops is that they can be tailored to fit the themes of any existing corporate event, whether the focus is on teambuilding, communication, creativity or some other facet of corporate development.

To book a corporate drumming workshop event or a team building drumming workshop please contact us on 0800 689 9909 or email info@trapmedia.com.

What is PSHE?

Personal, social, health and economic PSHE education is a programme of learning opportunities and experiences that aid children and young people to grow and develop as individuals and as members of families and of social and economic communities.

Why is PSHE education important to schools?

PSHE education is important to schools’ statutory responsibilities to

Encourage children and young people’s wellbeing

Achieve the whole curriculum aims

Promote community cohesion

The relationship between PSHE education and school philosophy is important. An effective school philosophy requires:

effective relationships between all members of the school community

students to play an active part in decision making

school policies to be compatible with what is taught in PSHE education

Why are PSHE Workshops important to children?

PSHE Workshops help to equip pupils with knowledge, attitudes, understanding and practical skills to live safe, productive, fulfilled and responsible lives. PSHE Workshops encourage students to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, positive learning and career choices. It also enables children and young people to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes, and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter throughout life.

How do PSHE Workshops effect personal development?

PSHE Workshops are aimed to make a significant contribution to pupil’s personal development. The promotion of young people’s personal development and social development is a key aspect of education. It helps to underpin other learning across other subject. Children develop the skills they need to grow and develop as individuals and members of society, which is very important.

PSHE Workshops help to contribute to personal development by helping young people to build their identities, confidence and self-esteem, make career choices and understand what influences their decisions. The goal is to enables them to recognise, accept and shape their identities, to understand and accommodate difference and change, to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings. Developing an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to work with others will help them to form and maintain good relationships, and better enjoy and manage their lives.

We offer a range of Sex Education Workshops, Enterprising Workshops, Anti Bullying Workshops, Drug and Alcohol Awareness Workshops, Citizenship Workshops, Conflict Resolution Workshops and Gun and Knife Crime Workshops.

Using drama based workshops and involving all participants it is a great way to educate and help combat the issues children face in schools. Our PSHE Workshops are run by the UK’s best facilitators who have key knowledge and experience in dealing with tricky subjects such as bullying.

Our PSHE Workshops are designed to be customised according to the needs of your organisation and are a natural compliment to existing lessons.

Brazil is hugely famous for its carnival festivals; thousands of people parade the streets of the Rio De Janeiro dancing vibrant and loud samba rhythms. Samba’s rhythms are made up of several different drums to make one unique and inspiring sound.

Samba Drumming and music has been around for a long time and is just as popular today as it has ever been, it is still one of the most popular musical genres in Brazil.

In addition to rhythm, samba drumming links to a whole historical culture of food, varied dances, parties, clothes, artists, including painters, sculptors, designers, and stylists. These designers and stylist make the clothes, costumes, carnival floats. Samba and Samba Drumming has so many cultural roots that it makes a Samba Drumming or Samba Dance workshop ideal for not only learning new sounds and rhythms but for soaking up and learning about the culture and history of Brazil in an exciting and engaging way.

What will you get out of a Samba Drumming Workshop?

Samba drumming creates a lot of fun and enjoyment. To spend a hour learning to play unfamiliar rhythms on instruments you may never even have seen before, and then to produce a creditable performance is enormously rewarding.

With one of our fully trained and authentic facilitators participants can usually produce an acceptable sound on an instrument relatively quickly, without having to put in hours of practice. This makes samba workshops accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Participants are first introduced to the drum and how it is an important part of Brazilian Culture. Participants sit in a circle where each has a drum placed in front of them. One of our authentic Samba Drummers will then do a brief overview of the drum, from experience participants are usually itching to get stuck in and make a noise with the drums! The Drummer will then take participants through various noises and rhythms making students repeat and explore the sounds.

The main aim of the workshop is to create an amazing sound that everyone is part of, making everyone drum together to the same rhythm really does help bring people together. It’s all about having fun creating a great sound and learning.
