Brazil is hugely famous for its carnival festivals; thousands of people parade the streets of the Rio De Janeiro dancing vibrant and loud samba rhythms. Samba’s rhythms are made up of several different drums to make one unique and inspiring sound.
Samba Drumming and music has been around for a long time and is just as popular today as it has ever been, it is still one of the most popular musical genres in Brazil.
In addition to rhythm, samba drumming links to a whole historical culture of food, varied dances, parties, clothes, artists, including painters, sculptors, designers, and stylists. These designers and stylist make the clothes, costumes, carnival floats. Samba and Samba Drumming has so many cultural roots that it makes a Samba Drumming or Samba Dance workshop ideal for not only learning new sounds and rhythms but for soaking up and learning about the culture and history of Brazil in an exciting and engaging way.
What will you get out of a Samba Drumming Workshop?
Samba drumming creates a lot of fun and enjoyment. To spend a hour learning to play unfamiliar rhythms on instruments you may never even have seen before, and then to produce a creditable performance is enormously rewarding.
With one of our fully trained and authentic facilitators participants can usually produce an acceptable sound on an instrument relatively quickly, without having to put in hours of practice. This makes samba workshops accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
Samba Drumming Workshops allow participants to experience a bit of the Carnival Brazilian culture whilst learning about working together as a team, rather than individual performance, readily demonstrating the notion of ‘the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
What will you be doing?
People learn samba drumming by listening and following, so you do not need to have any previous experience of playing an instrument or the ability to read music. Samba Workshops include:
an explanation of the basics
learning patterns of rhythm
playing together as a whole group
learning visual cues for starting and stopping
learning ‘breaks’ – the introduction of a different pattern, or a section playing on its own
learning ‘breaks’ – the introduction of a different pattern, or a section playing on its own
Participants are first introduced to the drum and how it is an important part of Brazilian Culture. Participants sit in a circle where each has a drum placed in front of them. One of our authentic Samba Drummers will then do a brief overview of the drum, from experience participants are usually itching to get stuck in and make a noise with the drums! The Drummer will then take participants through various noises and rhythms making students repeat and explore the sounds.
The main aim of the workshop is to create an amazing sound that everyone is part of, making everyone drum together to the same rhythm really does help bring people together. It’s all about having fun creating a great sound and learning.
