Dear Trap Media, ,
Suffice to say George lived up to the recommendation for African Drumming & Dance. The children had a great time and George was very willing to fit in with our needs (including working in a very restrictive space as the party proved so popular). I would very much like to book a African drumming workshop with George next year so will be in touch when the event is planned and hopefully he will be available.

I will pass the word around about George and will be in touch sometime in 2010.

Dear Trap Media, I’m not sure if Yve has contacted you since we had the African Drumming workshop on 24th October. But the session was excellent, the African drummer (Mohamed) was interactive, friendly and had the group engaged to the African Drumming Workshops. Many thanks for a fabulous African experience!

Dear Trap Media, We had a fantastic day on Sunday and I would like to say how marvelous the African Drumming workshops were. None of our young people have experienced African Drumming before or anything like it before. We were all so impressed by the couple who came and managed to smile and be constantly enthusiastic all day! Thank you Trap Media and I will sing your praises to all from now on.

Dear Trap Media, The African Drumming workshops went really well, I was very impressed!! George was a fantastic African Drumming instructor and really motivated the young people, some of which had extensive additional learning needs.

The session were well structured but flexible for the y/p needs, and all the y/p engaged.  The school has received good feedback from the y/p and the staff attending, i will forward this on if they send it to me. Thanks again, and we are still trying to arrange two more schools to be involved, i will be in touch soon.

African Drumming Workshops
Traditional African Drumming Workshop @ Friern Barnet School

African drumming has a great cultural heritage and is an incredibly popular workshop. Africa has a rich variety of instruments and many call it the “drum continent”.

In this African Drumming workshop, a drum circle will be created and a master drummer will teach participants how to play the Djembe drum. Participants will also learn the significance and uses of drumming in African culture, where they are always an accompaniment for any manner of ceremony, such as births, deaths marriages etc.

West African Drumming workshops music accompanies important life events, like marriage, childbirth, working and hunting. It has a very close relationship both with dance and with the tones and rhythmic patterns of the local language. The music is built from varied timbres playing interlocking rhythmic parts to form a polyrhythmic whole, often led by a master drummer using call and response patterns.

During the Workshop Using authentic handmade instruments and genuine African rhythms, pupils learn to play, in ensemble, the pulsing grooves and layered textures that are West African drumming, using Djembe, Kpanlogo, Bougourabou and Doundoun drums, as well as shakers, bells and tuned Balafon. Having mastered the technique and characteristic rhythms, pupils learn to create their own.

Sessions may run from 30mins to 1 hour, depending on the age group, and fit with the school timetable where possible. The time may be used in many ways; often schools want every class to have at least one contact so everyone has an opportunity to share the excitement. We also encourage a African Drumming performance towards the end of a project.

We will provide everyone with a Djembe drum and take the participants through a body rhythm workshop, leading in to a traditional composition involving multiple parts. Everyone will be able to play an instrument. The end result is a powerful sound and highly stimulating experience.

Tales & Myths - African Storytelling Workshops with Music or Dance

Experience the rich history and myths of the African continent with our interactive African Storytelling Workshops.

There may be no fires to sit around in our urban settings, but story telling lives on! Stories were told to make children aware of the world and to encourage good values in their lives.

Our African Storytelling workshop is an age old tradition, and serves as oral vehicle for imparting values and cultural ethics to the younger generation while providing entertainment and recreation. Historically, African Storytelling was essentially a communal participatory experience and therefore ideally for school environments.  Stories are told by our authentic West African storytellers with the emphasis on full interaction through song, chant, music, or dance.

Storytelling
African Storytelling Workshop & Music @ St Vincent Primary School

Participants also have the opportunity to discover, touch and play beautiful hand-made instruments. The beauty of African storytelling is that it is fashioned around myths and cosmological beliefs with wonderfully expressive characters and adventures designed to stimulate imagination.

As with all our workshops, African Storytelling can be customised to meet the needs of participants. All Stories are chosen and adapted according to various age groups. We recommend that African Storytelling workshops be combined with either African Dance or Music to make the workshop more interactive to participants.
